The EVOKE method, also known as the Kinder Life Planning process, is a method of financial planning that is designed to help individuals identify and pursue their life goals and values. The method was developed by George Kinder, a financial planner and founder of the Kinder Institute of Life Planning.
The EVOKE method is based on the idea that financial planning should not just be about setting and achieving financial goals, but should also be about helping individuals identify and achieve their broader life goals. The method consists of three stages:

  1. Exploration: In this stage, the individual works with a life planner to explore their values, goals, and priorities. This may involve asking questions such as "What is most important to you in life?" and "What are your dreams and aspirations?"

  2. Vision: In this stage, the individual and their life planner work together to create a vision for the future based on the insights gained in the exploration stage. The vision may include both financial and non-financial goals, such as traveling the world, starting a business, or spending more time with family.

  3. Execution: In this stage, the individual and their life planner work together to create a plan to achieve the vision. This may involve creating a financial plan, as well as identifying other steps that need to be taken to achieve the individual's goals.

  4.

The EVOKE method is based on the idea that financial planning should be focused on helping individuals achieve their life goals, rather than just their financial goals. By taking a more holistic approach to financial planning, the EVOKE method aims to help individuals create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Below are the 3 questions that George Kinder created for the EVOKE process. These are given as "homework" a few weeks before the Visions meeting. What you come up with will be the foundations of your financial life plan.

The first question is about how you design your life by if you had all the money you needed forever.

“Imagine you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs, now and in the future. How would you live your life? Would you change anything? Let yourself go. Don’t hold back on your dreams. Describe a life that is complete and richly yours.”

The second question is getting you to think that you have less time than you think.

“Now imagine that you visit your doctor, who tells you that you have only 5-10 years to live. You won’t ever feel sick, but you will have no notice of the moment of your death. What will you do in the time you have remaining? Will you change your life and how will you do it?” (Note that this question does not assume unlimited funds.)

The third question is forcing you to think about what and who matters, and the regrets that die with you.

“Finally, imagine that your doctor shocks you with the news that you only have 24 hours to live. Notice what feelings arise as you confront your very real mortality. Ask yourself: What did you miss? Who did you not get to be? What did you not get to do?”
